Motion Control for OPC
Overview
The XMC® OPC Data Access Server provides direct access to
your motion-controlled equipment through the patented XMC
software platform for hardware-independent motion control,
as well as the OLE for Process Control (OPC) industry standard
for hardware-independent field device communications. Now
you can use one standard software product to configure, monitor,
and control motion-equipped factory machines that incorporate
various types of motion controllers, drives, and motors.
Traditionally, an application developer is required to develop
a custom or proprietary software interface, or server/driver,
to exchange data with machines equipped with different motion
controllers. XMC for OPC eliminates this requirement by coupling
the common high performance interface of OPC and the motion
controller-independent interfaces of XMC, while making valuable
motion data, or motion control functionality accessible from
OPC-compliant HMI, SCADA, control, and custom applications.
OPC is an industry standard created with the collaboration
of a number a leading worldwide automation and hardware software
suppliers working in cooperation with Microsoft. This standard
defines the method for exchanging real-time automation data
among PC-based clients using Microsoft operating systems.

Key Features
XMC Motion Control for OPC supports both OPC Data Access 1.0A
and 2.0 clients.
Visual Configuration
Configure your machine using the XMC Motion Administrator™.
The visual interface of the XMC Motion Administrator allows
the motion engineer to easily configure system axes, motor
parameters, and motion controller-specific settings. This
process requires no hardware programming or cumbersome communications
of controller-specific command codes to properly initialize
your motion hardware. The Motion Administrator handles these
details for you. Store machine configurations for different
motion controllers in one motion configuration file for easy
propagation to other machines. Setup the motion software system
on additional machines in minutes instead of hours or days.
General Motion Control Part Programs
Using the XMC Motion Studio™, application engineers can quickly
develop, debug, and deploy controller-independent motion part
programs that solve their point-to-point motion needs. The
visual interface of the XMC Motion Studio offers an easy point
and click method of building motion programs. Each motion
program can be tested using the single-step debug feature,
which allows the motion engineer to execute one command at
a time. XMC
OPC Data Access Server
The XMC OPC Data Access Server provides direct access via
the open motion XMC platform to the configuration, status,
variable settings, and position/feedback information of various
commercial PC-based and standalone motion controllers. XMC
OPC Server can access motion devices such as single and multi-axis
stepper and servo controllers on popular bus architectures
such as PCI, ISA, PC-104, and USB. Stand-alone controllers
connected via RS-232 or proprietary wiring schemes are also
included.
The XMC OPC server is multithreaded to maximize performance
for clients and it allows OPC clients to browse a controller’s
configuration settings or real-time variables without issuing
controller-specific specific command codes or syntax. The
common data representation the XMC provides for proprietary
motion controllers is now accessible by any OPC client. This
eliminates the need to develop or purchase separate OPC servers
for different motion controllers.
XMC for OPC allows monitoring and direct control of any motion-based
system with a controller or intelligent drive that is directly
supported by XMC. OPC for XMC is the single solution for integrating
multi-vendor motion control and motion system data directly
into your application software.
